Nowadays, many evolutionary media emerge to contrast Christianity with evolution theory. They tried to make us realize that we are just created as ‘advanced ape’, not image of God. It is not difficult today to find people with impressive qualifications, and not necessarily Christian, who believe in evolution, but do not believe it happened the way Darwin said it did. There are two main theories of neo-Darwinian theory of biological evolution, doctrine of common ancestry and the second theory is the mechanism of genetic mutation and natural selection. These controversies over the using evolution theory to explain creation have encouraged me to discuss this topic.
First, doctrine of common ancestry states that all life-forms evolved from a single primordial ancestor. This doctrine revealed that almost all living organism share the same genetic code, or DNA. Darwin’s Theory of Evolution is the widely held notion that all life is related and has descended from a common ancestor: the birds and the bananas, the fishes and the flowers — all related. Darwin’s general theory presumes the development of life from non-life and stresses a purely naturalistic (undirected) “descent with modification”. That is, complex creatures evolve from more simplistic ancestors naturally over time.
A biblical perspective of evolution theory must start from the true concept that can a single-celled organism like bacteria become a complex plant or animal? It has never been seen to happen, and there is no fossil record of a step-by-step transformation of that kind. Human beings have trillions of cells in their bodies. It had to have happened regardless of the evidence. Otherwise we would not have complex plants or animals. We cannot have these things just popping out of the void. That would be a supernatural creation.. In addition, there are no midway organisms between other organisms as transitional forms. Literally, millions of transitional forms would have existed for a bat and a whale to have evolved from a common ancestor. Thus, the evidence concerning the doctrine of common ancestry is against it. The lack of fossil record makes it clear that the idea of randomness could produce ordered and complex systems is very weak. Therefore, evolution theory is not qualified to be test scientifically because the changing process must be unique and unrepeatable. A number of different types of living organisms prove that they appeared abruptly on earth and they did not have a common ancestor (Sunderland, 2002, p.176). The similarities of creation prove that all creation has the same creator which point out to the one true God who created all things (Romans 1:20) (Batten, Catchpoole, Sarfati, & Wieland, 2010, p.115).
The second theory is the mechanism of genetic mutation and natural selection. According to the theory, evolutionary development occurs because random mutations produce new features in living things. Natural selection acts to preserve and accumulate minor advantageous genetic mutations. For example, a member of a species developed a functional advantage like grew wings. Its offspring would inherit that advantage and pass it on to their offspring. The inferior (disadvantaged) members of the same species would gradually die out, leaving only the superior (advantaged) members of the species. Natural selection is the preservation of a functional advantage that enables a species to compete better in the wild. Natural selection eliminates inferior species gradually over time.
However, this theory is weak because the process is just too slow and it cannot explain the origin of irreducibly complex system. The bible does not tell us how God created life so he could have created out of nothing, or he could have used lower stages of living organism as raw materials for the creation of higher forms through systemic changes that would have been wholly improbable on any naturalistic account. The existence of biological complexity demands a designing intelligence (Zacharias, 2003, p.68-69). In addition, suppose bacteria and penicillin. Penicillin does not work very well anymore because the surviving bacteria are resistant to it. This is not creating something new. This is not bacteria in the process of becoming alligators. Bacteria have been shifting and changing like this as long as there have been bacteria. But they are still bacteria and they are never going to be anything else. This is all that natural selection has ever been shown to do. So natural selection, which is the only thing we know that can make any change at all, must be responsible for doing all the changing. Then, if it were not, the theory is wrong.
Starting with this fundamental truth, “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with the God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” Notice “He” was with God in the beginning, not “it” was with God in the beginning. The Word is not merely a concept; it is a Being with intelligence and purpose, a Being who was with God and who was God. We cannot keep God out of creation because the particles could not do it. “Oh,” the answer comes, “you’ve changed the subject. I thought we were talking about science. Now you are bringing up religion. That’s a different subject.” And religion effectively means fantasy; it means your feelings. You can have that on Sunday morning, but during the week in the classroom and the laboratory where we are talking about what really happened, we rely on science. Unfortunately, science does have its limits by repeatable observable processes in the present. In contrast, evolution is a speculation about the unobservable and unrepeatable past. Their ideas are derived from assumptions about the past. But, Genesis is an eyewitness account of the origin of the universe and living organisms (Sarfati, 2008, p.29). Only supernatural design can explain the complexity of species. The law of nature cannot create new species to function in their environment. The order pattern is part of the divine plan. Finally, as Christian future teacher, personally, I will start to observe more how I could teach students about evolution theory with a biblical framework that prove the big hole of evolution which prove the existence of God as creator of all creations.
