Design Better Education Together

Design Better Education Together

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’
Margaret Mead

Virtual learning, Google Arts & Culture, Local Guides, Minecraft, Kahoot!, Google Computer Science (CS) First, Class Dojo, Chromebook.

Those are some digital learning tools that I explored this year and I fully realized we have so many tools to explore. Yet, at the end it’s not just about the tools, it’s about how we use technology to solve the biggest challenge in our classroom, school, or even education system.

My biggest resolution in 2017 is no longer just bring technology to teachers and students, but encourage them to brainstorm the problems they face in school and explore opportunity to solve problems in education.

I love how Google Education Transformation Center simplified seven elements of education that need to be changed for real transformation: Vision, Learning, Culture, PD, Technology, Funding & Sustainability, and Community Engagement. That’s why we need diverse perspectives to solve our educational problems.

Design Thinking

This strong urge motivates me to challenge teachers in Indonesia to design their best ideas to solve education problems through various creative solutions. We called it Design Thinking.

Here’s IDEO definition of Design Thinking:

Design Thinking is the confidence that everyone can be part of creating a more desirable future, and a process to take action when faced with a difficult challenge. That kind of optimism is well needed in education.

As a global platform of design thinking, IDEO created OpenIDEO, a nonprofit community of design thinkers to create solutions for various platform.

In education, they designed a special design thinking platform calledThe Teachers Guild :

I’m impressed how The Teachers Guild build an environment where teachers are challenged to contribute their thinking in online discussion forum and vote the best ideas. Additionally, this community also collaborates with coaches who are actually teacher, school leaders, EdTech mentors who have strong experiences in solving educational problems using design thinking.

How do we implement this approach in our local education system?

  1. Explore various resources.

IDEO.org provides a free resources for educators to design solutions with the help of free book ‘Design Thinking for Educators’ which you can download here.

and you can also take online course at Acumen started February 7, 2017 !

2. Initiate a community of “Design-thinkers” for Education

I am actually looking for anyone who have strong passion in solving educational problems in Indonesia. Everyone from any background are welcomed! Then probably we can propose partnership from either The Teachers Guild or OpenIDEO or even start our one with their support.

3. Join Design Thinking Meet-Up

Let’s meet-up to learn and share ideas to solve education problems together through following design thinking process from ‘Design Thinking for Educators’ book:

Are you ready to take the challenges and be part of change-makers for Indonesian education through Design Thinking ?
